Distance – Proximity – New Normal

In this short project, students were asked to create their own Chindogu* as responses to the challenges of togetherness, prescribed distance and proximity around COVID-19. Following the ten tenets of Chindogu, each object must insist on its freedom and absurdity, it must be universally understandable and thus, must constitute a non-verbal form of communication.

*The Japanese «unuseless objects» by journalist Kenji Kawakami – called Chin- dogu – are strange inventions that can be seen as manifestations of political, economic and poetic resistance. While they promise a function and are usable to some degree, they remain completely useless.
