Tolerance! Which tolerance?

For us designers, the contradictions of our discipline become apparent as soon as we are to take ecological or economic perspectives into account — beyond all the actual formal aesthetic work. Since at least it becomes apparent that our discipline, located in the argumentative nowhere land between sustainable preservation and disruptive change, chooses and combines its arguments according to the situation. Sometimes there are economic, sometimes ecological reasons that one puts forward, or problems that one raises in order to qualitatively justify one's own design. In this way, every consumer society uses its design and organizes and/or sublimates its cognitive dissonances.
In our one-week workshop we deal with the question in what kind of world we want to live in. To find it out we will form two working groups. One group will deal strictly with the present and its limitations, the second group will work on the future — open in all directions. On the first day of the workshop the two groups organize themselves and will be briefed about the exact project conditions. We will built, stage and compare the two resulting ' spaces of imagination ' in our one studio. We are intrigued by the following questions: How does ' working on the present ' differ from ' making the future '? Which of us can and/or should give birth to stars? Are there dancing stars? Why should we give birth to dancing stars?
About Gerhard M. Buurman
Gerhard M. Buurman is a trained pattern maker, a studied industrial designer (University of Essen), a docto rated art theorist, self-appointed cybernetician and modelologist, reality-hardened systematologist, theory experimenter and musical multi-instrumental layman. He worked for more than 20 years at the Zurich University of the Arts in various prototypical contexts and functions. Since then he is developing a design master course on ' Future Making ' at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences. In 2099, his continuously growing collection of › mostly scientific models ‹ will be combined in a specially architectured brandnew museum building and made accessible to the general public.
